CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Health Education Supervisory series. Positions in this class are responsible for planning, supervising and evaluating general health education and related service programs in a central agency public health education program having statewide impact. This class is distinguished from the Health Education Coordinator by its formal supervisory responsibility of Health Educators. It is distinguished from the Health Education Director by the latter's responsibility for directing the entire statewide public health education program.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs supervisory work of considerable complexity involving the planning and supervising of statewide health education programs. Positions identify and assess program/service needs; consult with health professionals to formulate program policy and plans; prepare grant proposals to fund programs and manage grant monies;and provide supervision and ongoing training to program staff. Positions coordinate demonstration projects to increase public or student awareness of health issues and provide technical consultation to industry and diverse organizations interested in health awareness and chronic disease detection. Designs or identifies and recommends health education programs for targeted areas. Establishes health education committees for the purpose of program enhancement and public awareness. Assists in the development of audio-visual and other teaching aids.

Supervision Given: Positions supervise Health Educators, Health Educator Seniors and office services personnel.

Supervision Received: Positions receive directions from Health Education Director of higher level administrative class.

Scope: Work affects the success of health education programs or highly specialized central agency statewide public health education programs which are essential to the overall mission of the agency.

Impact of Actions: Effective planning, supervision and implementation ensure the successful provision of health programs for the assigned portion of the agency and the delivery of quality services to citizens. Effective programs positively affect the health and well-being of citizens and result in increased goodwill toward the agency.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with state and local health organizations, local industries, volunteer and special interest groups, students and other state agencies to acquire data, deliver services, provide technical assistance and provide educational information.

 

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledges: Considerable knowledge of health education and behavioral theories; research methodologies, statistics and program evaluation; and of current health issues. Working knowledge of the principles of supervision and grants management.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to interpret data and develop programs for the purpose of educating others; to supervise the work of others; and to establish effective working relationships with diverse individuals.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in public health education, health science, or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in health education that included program development and evaluation responsibilities.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
