CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Health Education series. Positions in this class plan and implement a district-wide health education program or a segment of a highly specialized statewide program which may include the supervision of a Health Educator. This class is distinguished from the Health Educator class which plans and implements segments of a health education program. It is distinguished from the Health Education Coordinator class which plans, supervises and evaluates general health education programs and related services for a health region, institution or a specialized statewide program.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty involving the planning and implementation of a district-wide or university-wide health education program or a segment of a statewide program. Positions conduct needs assessments, analyze available data to develop formalized health education programs and implement programs via community presentations, committee work and traditional public outreach methods. Conducts in-service training for agency personnel. Assists with the development of program policy and long-range goals. Initiates community/public coalition efforts. Provides technical assistance to other agencies, schools and businesses. Coordinates with other departments and agencies to implement and promote health awareness and education programs.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, some positions may supervise a Health Educator or provide technical assistance to graduate and undergraduate students.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Health Education Supervisor or Director, Public Health Office, or other agency clinician or administrator.

Scope: Work affects the success of district-wide health education programs or segments of highly specialized statewide health education programs which are essential to the agency's mission and which, in turn, affect a targeted community.

Impact of Actions: Effective planning and implementation ensures the successful operation of a district, statewide or university-wide health education program, its delivery of services to citizens and the effectiveness of grant funded activities.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with national health organizations, other state agencies and the public to coordinate the delivery of services; to obtain or provide information; to deliver training or public information; and to coordinate coalition activities.

 

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledges: Working knowledge of health education techniques, curricular planning and implementation, group dynamics, and the media; and of current public health issues; of statistics, research techniques, behavior theory and counseling.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and coordinate health education activities; to promote public health education to the public; and to oversee grant funded activities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in health science, or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in a health education function which included public outreach responsibilities.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
