CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Health Education series. Positions in this class are responsible for planning and implementing segments of health education programs in a health region, agency, or university student health program. This class is distinguished from the Health Educator Senior class by the latter's responsibility to supervise a district health education program or to plan and implement a segment of a highly specialized statewide program.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty which involves planning, implementing and evaluating a segment of a health education program. Communicates the objectives of the program and available services to a target audience. Provides technical consultation to various organizations, students and/or the general public interested in current health issues. Conducts surveys, makes presentations and utilizes media to promote health and related services. Serves on interagency committees to promote health awareness. Trains staff and/or volunteers in the methods, practices and purposes of health education.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Health Education Supervisor, Health Education Director, or other agency clinician or administrator.

Scope: Work affects the success of assigned segments of health education programs which are essential to the agency, district and/or regional master plans.

Impact of Actions: Effective planning and implementing of segments of health education programs facilitates the successful operation of the overall agency, university, region or specialized statewide program and its delivery of services to citizens.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contact with health organizations, other state agencies, clients and the public to coordinate public education efforts, to coordinate the delivery of services, and to provide or obtain information.

 

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledges: Some knowledge of health education techniques, curricular planning and current public health issues; of statistics, research techniques, behavior theory and counseling.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and coordinate health education activities, to promote health education to the general public, to communicate orally and in writing and to make presentations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in health science or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience involving health education.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
