CLASS CONCEPT FUNCTION

This single class series provides photographic development support to forensic photographers, scientists, medical examiners and law enforcement agencies throughout the state. Positions in this class supervise a photo finishing laboratory which produces prints of evidence needed for forensic evaluation. This class is distinguished from the Forensic Photographer class by its focus on photo developing and related lab work.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty involving the monitoring of photographic chemicals to insure quality print production. Determines the most appropriate development or reproduction technique and monitors quality control within the laboratory using knowledge of printing techniques, equipment and standard operating procedures for the laboratory. Insures that all prints are produced efficiently and in accordance with the needs of the forensic photographers and other interested parties. Maintains all records and supplies for the laboratory.

Supervision Given: Provides direct supervision to laboratory technicians who are responsible for most of the hands-on development activities.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from the assistant bureau director or other agency administrator. Technical guidance is provided by a forensic scientist as needed.

Scope: Work affects the accuracy and quality of photographic development for photos, documents and fingerprints which are used as evidence by a wide array of law enforcement agencies.

Impact of Actions: Forensic evaluations are dependent upon the quality of photographs which are produced under strict quality control laboratory procedures. Improper processing or destruction of film jeopardizes forensic evaluations.

Personal Contacts: Daily contact with law enforcement agencies to establish work priorities for court dates and to provide photographic advice.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of photographic processes and chemistry as they relate to photo finishing; and of photographic

techniques and equipment. Working knowledge of policies and regulations governing the organizational unit; of all record keeping requirements; and supervisory principles.

Skills: Considerable skill in transferring the latent light images on film to an accurate reproduction on the photographic paper.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to organize work/submissions and convert them into a finished product within required time frames; and to supervise others.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent; and post-secondary training in photography and/or chemistry.

Level an Type of Experience: Considerable experience in photography to include complex photo finishing and camera operation.
