CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third and supervisory class in the Photography series. Positions in this class are responsible for supervising a complex photography program, or major unit of such a program, which is subject to substantial national and international as well as statewide attention. The photography programs supervised by positions in this class are characterized by complex in-house production capabilities and laboratory functions. Informational, instructional and promotional products are developed to meet agency standards for photographic excellence, and to insure cost effectiveness. Positions in this class supervise the program and assigned staff but continue to take photography assignments viewed as complex or critical to the agency's overall mission. Duties require the exercise of independent judgment and decision making in the development of program goals, policies, operating procedures, allocation of resources and translation of communication and marketing objectives into effective photographic solutions. This class is distinguished from the Photographer Senior class by the responsibility to supervise the photography program, or major unit of the program, and by the complexity and diversity of assignments

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty in the supervision of a photographic program/unit which provides diverse services, i.e., publicity, news, agency activities, art objects and exhibitions, portraits, and academic and research exhibits. Supervises photographic labs which provide diverse photo development services. Consults with clients to determine needs, costs, production schedules, and content; and insures that projects are completed in accordance with original objectives.

Supervision Given: Provides general supervision to Photographers, Photographer Seniors, Photography Laboratory Technicians and other personnel involved in the production of photographic materials

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from an agency administrator, program director or faculty member.

Scope: Work affects the success of the photographic program/unit; its quality of service and use of resources.

Impact of Actions: Photographic materials represent agency missions and directly affect public opinion, finances, enrollment, marketing and related interests with an agency. Effective decisions result in efficient use of time, money, and personnel resources.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with clients, agency management and staff, faculty, students, private industry and media personnel to discuss program goals and photographic needs.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of advance photographic techniques and equipment, of photographic processes and chemistry as they relate to photo finishing; of audiovisual and print-media production; and of supervisory principles and practices.

Skills: Working skill in photographic equipment and production.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise and oversee photographic unit and staff. Demonstrated ability to plan and supervise the work of others. Demonstrated ability to operate photographic and audiovisual equipment. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients. Demonstrated ability to meet project deadlines.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent and post-secondary training in photography and audiovisual media.

Level and Experience: Considerable experience in photography and audiovisual media preferably in a service organization, which included supervisory experience.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges, skills and abilities may be substituted for this training and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class specification replaces the specification for this class established June 1, 1985. It was revised in September 1988 as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program.
