CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Photography series. Positions in this class provides a diversity of photographic services combined with technical development skills and the application of quality control photography standards. This class is distinguished from the Photographer and the Photography Laboratory Technician classes by having the additional responsibilities of quality control, development of story boards and script-writing, functioning as lead worker for several photography-related staffs, providing training and guidance, approving leave, evaluating performance, performing highly specialized services to support research, teaching, medical or general media efforts, and serving as a consultant to internal staff and faculty and external non-profit organizations. It is distinguished from the Photography Supervisor class by the latter's additional departmental authority such as policy making and budget development.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty in the coordination of complex photographic requests of a large agency or institution involving specialized or scientific services. Incumbents determine methodology and necessary equipment prior to giving work assignments to department staff. Incumbents will be involved in photographic activities and technical processes which require the extensive use of special photographic and lighting techniques, and results will be utilized for educational, promotional, legal, research, medical, publication, and illustrative purposes. Positions monitor the quality of all photographic products for prints, projection, exhibition, and electronic media to insure control standards are met and work orders are accurately completed. Positions train staff and faculty in the use of photographic and darkroom techniques, provide assistance to departments having their own cameras and darkrooms; may undertake special audiovisual and media projects involving script writing, editing, videography, with the use of advanced production and post-production equipment; may provide external consultation to non-profit organizations and civic groups in photographic matters.

Supervision Given: Positions serve as lead workers to classified and wage photographic assistants, Photographers, Photography Laboratory Technicians, and student workers in the assignment of work requests, determination of methodology and of laboratory techniques to meet work order requests, employ quality control standards, and provide immediate supervision.

Supervision Received: Receives direction from a Photography Supervisor or other managerial position having authority over the photographer unit

Scope: Work affects the quality, completion, and timeliness of agency photographic assignments.

Impact of Actions: As photographic work is often used for educational or medical purposes and is of a specialized or scientific nature, accuracy and clarity is vital in maintaining high standards. Results of ineffective work are reflected in the community by erroneous or ambiguous learning of vital information. Work may also affect medical documentation

Personal Contacts: Frequent contact with staff and faculty, and with groups outside the agency through the telephone, in writing, or in person to arrange or discuss photographic activities.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of photographic processes and darkroom techniques piques, chemicals, and both manual and automated equipment. Considerable knowledge of photographic field quality-control standards. Working knowledge of supervisory techniques.

Skills: Working skill in darkroom techniques for the development of color and black and white prints for a multitude of purposes. Working skill in performing routine maintenance and making minor repairs and adjustments to photographic equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of photographic equipment, specialized lighting, and editing/production equipment. Demonstrated ability in visual problem solving and design. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with people and work independently.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Course work in photography and darkroom techniques, video production, lighting, and editing. Additional education/training in a specialized field, such as medical, scientific, or veterinary science, may be requested in order to meet agency needs.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in all areas of photographic and room processes, using a variety of lighting, equipment, and cameras. Experience in shooting and editing videotapes, and retouching photographs. Experience in training, assigning, and directing the work of others and creative problem resolution. Experience may be required in a specialized field, such as medical, scientific, or veterinary

science, in order to provide for more familiarity with the problems and techniques of photography in such fields.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
