CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Photography series. Positions in this class provide photographic documentation of events, persons, and objects for an agency. The emphasis of this classification is placed upon actual photography although some processing or darkroom work may be performed. The Photographer class is distinguished from the Photography Laboratory Technician class by the emphasis on the actual process of photographic shooting rather than focusing on the technical and developmental aspects of photographic work. This class is distinguished from the Photographer Senior class by the latter's additional responsibilities for performing as lead workers, assigning work requests, using quality control methods, providing immediate supervision and being involved in more specialized or sophisticated photo-taking assignments.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty in carrying out scheduled activities for the agency in shooting black and white, and color photographs using a wide variety of cameras, lenses, films, and lighting equipment in both outdoor and indoor settings. Photographic subjects include construction projects, art objects, group pictures, staff and other persons for identifications, and patients for record keeping, documentation, agency history, publication, educational/promotional usage, and research. Maintains event and subject logs; inventories supplies and equipment; makes minor repairs and adjustments) orders supplies; and recommends purchase of equipment. May perform miscellaneous related duties such as self-exercised photographic quality control testing prior to submitting work to a higher authority; holding staff and external consultations; producing slides for motion picture stills; and providing general agency support. Positions may involve a combination of photographic shooting and darkroom activities and require the development of photographs and prints for a variety of agency uses through the application of photographic laboratory processes, equipment, and chemicals. May maintain darkroom inventory of supplies and equipment, performs routine preventative maintenance and repairs; and recommend outside repairs or equipment replacement.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions may oversee thee performance and training of work study students or wage personnel.

Supervision Received: General supervision is received from a Photographer Senior or Photograph-er Supervisor, or other Managerial position having authority over the photography/darkroom unit.

Scope: Work affects agency-wide photographic work which must be composition ally correct to meet quality, time and production standards.

Impact of Actions: Positions have the initial responsibility for the obtainment of high quality photographic reproduction of events, persons, activities, or objects. Failure to meet agency standards and schedules adversely affects agency public relations and the purpose of photographic utilization for education, research, agency/production promotion, legal defense, or other functions.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contact with staff, faculty, students, external organizations, photographic technicians and manufacturers, and the general public to discuss photographic activities and the materials needed and to give technical advice.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of photographic equipment, techniques and material needed to take black and white and color stills and aerial photographs; and of darkroom processing, techniques, and equipment.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of various cameras and development equipment. Working skill in performing routine maintenance and repairs to photographic equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally; to work independently; and to take and develop photographs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: Course work in photography or photo-journalism with emphasis on pictorial composition, camera usage, capabilities and aids. Additional education/training in a specialized field, such as medical or scientific, may be required for some positions in order to meet agency-specific needs.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience through freelance or commercial work in the use of a wide variety of cameras, photographic equipment and aids, with some experience in darkroom techniques. Experience in specialized photography, such as medical or scientific, may be required for some positions.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding know ledges and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY
