CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Television/Video Production series for positions that develop, produce and direct television, film and video programming for an agency or educational institution. Positions in this class provide basic technical support to television, video, film, and multimedia production staff by setting-up, operating, and performing routine camera operation, lighting, videotape editing, duplication and minor maintenance on television and video production equipment used in studio or remote locations. This class is distinguished from the Television/Video Specialist class by the performance of routine technical and operational related production tasks and general assistance functions rather than being responsible for a creative production project and technical functional area.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty requiring the application of standardized procedures for setting up and creating the television production set in a studio or at remote locations. Positions in this class set up, control and operate lights, cables, power, microphones, cameras and other production equipment; perform minor editing of video recordings and transferring dialogue, music and sound effects to videotape or audiotape for productions. This class maintains schedules for use in editing, reproduction equipment, and playback requests for videotape, film, and multimedia productions; maintains inventory of equipment and dispensable supplies; and orders supplies used in production; may research, evaluate, develop, and recommend specifications for video/film and sound equipment. Positions may provide training to faculty, staff and students in operation and care of equipment and may perform routine maintenance on studio and field television production equipment.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor in this class. Some positions may provide work direction to students and wage employees.

Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from a higher level position in the Television/Video Production series in the form of specific instructions or directions related to production activities.

Scope: Positions in this class facilitate the development and quality of television and video productions produced by others in the unit.

Impact of Actions: Effective decisions regarding setting up, operating and maintaining production equipment positively impact the quality of live or recorded television, video, and productions produced. Errors could result in inefficient use of resources and/or damage to equipment, a detrimental effect on the final product and image of the agency or failure to meet goals and deadlines.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with agency staff on production activities and occasional external contacts with television/video operations to coordinate cable or satellite systems.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of studio and remote video production techniques, the theory, principles, and techniques of lighting, audio, videography, and television production equipment basic preventive maintenance.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of television and sound equipment, and electronic video equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to properly set up and operate basic television and video equipment; follow studio production, editing, and equipment operating procedures; communicate effectively; and maintain effective working relationships with technical personnel and non-technical clients.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: None.

Education of Training: Completion of high school or equivalency and some training in video/film production.

Level and Type or Experience: Some experience setting up and/or operating television and/or electronic video equipment or performing related television production tasks.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This is a new class developed as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program and replaces the Television Production Technician class, effective July 1, 1994.
