Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises the functioning of a day care facility serving children of agency employees.

Supervises Dependent Day Care Assistants, university students, and volunteers. Reports to the day care center director (faculty).

Plans and conducts daily activities for children aged two to six. Prepares teaching materials to implement the daily activity plan. Organizes classroom learning centers to promote optimal growth of individual children. Plans outdoor play, field trips, and programs to enhance total development of young children.

Oversees meal and snack service. Ascertains cleanliness of cots and bedding. Treats injured or sick children administering medication as prescribed and approved. Contacts parents and medical personnel as situation warrants.

Observes and records individual and group behavior. Administers diagnostic and prescriptive tests as needed. Reports to parents in writing and/or in conference. Keeps records on attendance, meals, accidents, and medication administered.

Assigns duties to paid and volunteer assistants and supervises their performance. Attends staff meetings, workshops, and parent meetings.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the principles and practices of early childhood education. Knowledge of the typical stages of child growth and development. Ability to plan teaching and recreational activities for young children and to observe their performance. Ability to supervise the work of others and to relate to children and parents. Ability to keep necessary records.

Graduation from high school. Associate degree in early childhood education preferred. Experience in working with young children. A combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the degree.
