Distinguishing Features of the Work

Provides after-hours dormitory supervision, care and assistance for deaf, blind and multi-handicapped elementary and secondary school students.

May act as lead worker in shift scheduling arrangements. Receives general supervision and program direction from faculty dormitory coordinators.

The work involves planning for and implementing student activities, assisting in the teaching of independent living skills, counseling and advising students on personal and academic problems, and executing prescribed individual student behavior programs. Evaluates student progress relative to the behavior and education programs.

Incumbents of this class also perform extensive chaperone duties in transporting students to and from home on weekends and holidays, and for participation in local community activities. Maintains attendance records and prepares reports. Ensures that students receive medical care and meet medication schedules. Organizes and participates in student recreational and educational activities. Is responsible for dormitory safety and emergency evacuation. Deals with rule infractions.

The nature of the work requires frequent contact with parents and teachers relative to student behavior and development.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of human behavior and personality development as applied to a communal setting. Knowledge of child care practices. Ability to supervise and counsel handicapped children while retaining respect and confidence. Ability to follow instructions in evaluating students. Ability to communicate effectively in sign language.

Graduation from high school and additional training or experience related to the position's duties; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
