CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is a single class series responsible for serving as an assistant to teaching faculty. Duties include working directly with students on projects, overseeing classroom laboratory sessions, demonstrating experiments, grading students' laboratory projects, tutoring individual students or groups of students, grading student papers, and preparing lesson plans. This class is distinguished from the Program Support Technician, Learning Laboratory Assistant, and other administrative support classes by the direct student contact duties involving specific academic/vocational subjects and the requirement for specific subject matter knowledge.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty in interpreting and explaining the subject matter and/or instructional policies to students in a classroom or science laboratory. Works directly with faculty members to develop lesson plans, laboratory experiments, tests and other classroom activities. Positions may independently conduct science laboratory sessions or structured portions of classroom activities. Grades student projects and papers and discusses the results with the students. Provides tutoring and other developmental work for individual students or groups of students; demonstrates and instructs students in the use of scientific laboratory equipment; proctors, reviews, and corrects student classroom and laboratory assignments and tests; counsels students, recommending appropriate remedial programs as approved by the instructor; and compiles and maintains statistics on student progress and performance.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives directions from faculty members who review lesson plans, outlines and schedules.

Scope: Work affects the quality of instruction provided to students for assigned portions of instructional programs; and the effectiveness and efficiency of classroom instructional activities and related administrative support.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance results in quality instruction of program material which positively affects student progress and comprehension in the course. Ineffective job performance can inhibit student learning.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts with faculty regarding assignments, activities and plans for instructional programs; and with students to review work, explain assignments, and provide tutorial assistance.

 

KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of appropriate subject matter; and working knowledge of individual and group teaching techniques.

Skills: Working skill in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to work with students of varying backgrounds and educational levels; to counsel students and provide remedial tutorial assistance; to evaluate student work; to operate laboratory equipment and instruct others in its use; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with course work in a subject field directly related to the assigned area of instruction.

Level and Typed of Experience: Some work experience related to the program area.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding know ledges and abilities may substitute for the education and experience.
