CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is a single class series responsible for tuning, repairing and maintaining pianos. Positions in this class manage and implement specialized technical support for a university school of music through full-time comprehensive maintenance of keyboard instruments and response to needs of performing students and guest artists in order to meet accreditation standards and the needs of the institution

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty by tuning all keyboard instruments to specified standards without the aid of electronic tuners. Adjusts, restores, and repairs all internal and external parts of keyboard instruments including keys, strings, pins and pin blocks, soundboards and bridges, cabinets, veneers, and finishes. Regulates to touch and voice all concert and studio pianos for guest artists, faculty and students. Assists before and during performances at varied locations as required. Designs and implements system of keyboard instrument records and inventory records. Maintains inventory of parts necessary for tuning, repair and restoration. Schedules all keyboard instruments for tuning on a regular basis c

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: General supervision is provided by a dean, department head, chairman or other faculty administrator. No technical supervision is received

Scope: Work affects studio and performance potentials of students, faculty and guest artists at on-campus and external locations

Impact of Actions: This position is responsible for precise craftsmanship in tuning and voicing keyboard instruments. In performance situations, the public image of the institution may be affected; and in the classroom, the level of instruction may be affected.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contact with faculty and students to coordinate equipment needs and resolve mechanical problems. Frequent external contact with music stores and vendors to acquire necessary supplies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of keyboard instrument construction and tuning theory. Working knowledge of management principles of scheduling to facilitate regular maintenance of all keyboard instruments and record keeping and inventory control methods to ensure proper maintenance of parts and supplies.

Skills: Considerable skill in regulating touch and voice, and restoration and repair of all internal and external components of key board instrument

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to tune by ear to concert standards without the aid of electronic tuners; to locate sources and procure necessary parts and supplies; and to communicate effectively with guest artists, faculty, students and public contacts in concert situations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Training in all aspects or keyboard instrument maintenance and repair at an independent level of professional craftsmanship.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in keyboard instrument maintenance and repair.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
