Distinguishing Features of the Work

Coordinates and manages a program of counseling and advisory services and oversees the observance of institutional rules and regulations in a large college dormitory (usually more than 500 students).

Responsibility involves establishing programs for counseling students and providing advice on personal problems, dealing with rule infractions, and for encouraging the use of cooperative services available within other university departments. The work is distinguished by the requirement for management activities through subordinate staff, maintaining records for the administration of the dormitory, and for organizing and participating in recreational and educational activities available for students. General supervision is received from the Dean and Assistant Dean of Student Services or some other high institutional official.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Promotes relationships and coordination of residence hall programs with services and departments which work closely with the program.

2. Assumes responsibility for complete office and/or desk coverage at all times, either by himself or an appointed assistant.

3. Attends weekly staff meetings with supervisor and conducts frequent meetings with staff in order to insure continuous two-way communication.

4. Maintains records pertinent to the administration of the residence hall area.

5. Assumes responsibility for assistance in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of staff.

6. Handles emergencies occurring in his area and coordinates with the necessary university departments or agencies.

7. Assumes responsibility for organizing the residence hall staff in his area in order to achieve the best possible operational results, orientating them to their responsibilities and conducting a program of in-service education and staff development for his assistants.

8. Frequently contacts resident assistants for the purpose of assisting with their personal problems and submits written evaluations semi-annually.

9. Aids in the development of a social and recreational program for area staff.

10. Organizes a program of training for unit officers of residence halls.

11. Assists in the establishment of educational, cultural, and recreational activities and programs in the area and exercises leadership and coordination of their activities as necessary to meet the overall objectives of the program.

12. Counsels students on personal and academic problems and makes appropriate referrals.

13. Handles all disciplinary matters and prepares reports and communications in conjunction with the resident assistants for the area or university judiciaries.

14. Makes all room assignments and approves or disapproves any changes.

15. Receives all administrative or maintenance complaints and performs necessary action.

16. Coordinates all matters pertinent to the physical and operational procedures of the residence with the Dean of Student Services or Housing Director.

17. Assumes other related responsibilities as designated by the Dean or Director.

 

Qualification Standards

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major studies in the social science field.

Mature judgment with ability to understand, communicate, and advise young adult in a responsible way; knowledgeable in interviewing and counseling techniques; possessing the quality of enforcing disciplinary measures while retaining respect and confidence from residents in doing so; initiative in planning and organizing such functions relevant to resident students.
