Distinguishing Features of the Work

Serves as a hostess, chaperon, and chancellor in ado dormitory for college students or student purses:

Duties involve responsibility for the over-all supervision of student residences and for the deportment of the students. Incumbents are responsible for insuring the proper maintenance and housekeeping of student living quarters, which may involve supervision of custodian personnel, and for insuring compliance with dormitory rules and regulations Responsibility is also attached for guiding and advising students on problems common to college life and dormitory living and for instilling high' moral and social ideals. No responsibility is assigned for counseling in situations involving academic problems or difficulties requiring professional guidance; such cases are immediately referred to higher authority for proper handling Supervision is received from a college dean or other administrative official who is consulted on all non-routine problems;

Although duties and responsibilities assigned to incumbents in these classes are essentially the same, different levels are warranted by differences in the number of students supervised. the larger residences more problems and difficulties are encountered in the administration of student dormitory life and there are more cases requiring individual guidance and counseling. The following approximations provide guide lines in determining the allocation of individual positions:

College Hostess A- positions assigned to residences accommodating generally less than 75 students

College Hostess B- positions assigned to residences accommodating generally from 75 to 150 students

Positions being utilized in the capacity of evening hostess and chaperon only with few if any responsibilities for counseling. housekeeping functions, shall be allocated to the class college Hostess 4.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class

1. Works and lives closely with students to gain their confidence and respect; consults with students, individually or in groups, and advises them on personal problems and situations involving social and moral personal conduct.

2. Works closely with dormitory councils to enforce house rules and regulations settles minor disturbances and misunderstandings; reports serious infractions of rules and students with serious problems to higher authority; promotes harmonious living conditions and proper study habits.

3. Grants permission for routine absences; receives and checks authorization for overnight and weekend leaves; keeps simple records of all absences and authorization; checks rooms at night to see that there are no unauthorized absences and that everything is in order; locks doors and windows at night; checks working condition of fire exits and turns out lights.

4. Gives instructions to a small force custodial personnel in maintaining cleanliness and orderliness of the residence makes daily check of premises and notifies proper office of necessary repairs makes daily inspections of students' rooms to insure proper housekeeping practices makes record of furniture condition at beginning and end of school terms to charge students for breakage or damage.

5. Assigns rooms to students, approves transfer of room assignments, effects room releases; maintains rooms for transient guests, registers visitors, collects and reports fees; collects and distributes linens and blankets; prepares periodic reports of building occupancy.

6. Receives guests and notifies students of visitors; chaperons date parlors and ensures proper conduct; serves as chaperon at dinners, dances and other social functions and may assist student groups in planning such activities;

7. Answers telephone and notifies student of call or takes message; receives and distributes mail' packages and telegrams; sends out laundry and dry cleaning for students and pays bills as requested; operates small canteen for sale of snacks and personal items.

 

8. Attends students who are sick and unable to attend classes; summons medical attention when necessary; sees that meals are prepared and served to ill students.

 

Qualification Standards

Completion of high school and experience involving public contact and work with young people' preferably in group activities.

Mature judgment; some knowledge of the principles and techniques of student counseling; some knowledge of the practices of good house housekeeping; an understanding and appreciation of the problems of "teen-age" students; interest in young people and familiarity with the social graces; ability to exercise tact) discretion, and diplomacy in the execution of duties; ability to gain respect and confidence of the students; ability to maintain the decorum of students; ability to meet end converse with parents of students.
