CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Instructional Center Support series that provides instructional aids, including computer-assisted instruction, in an academic resource center or learning laboratory setting. Positions in this class supervise the daily operation of a large center or laboratory complex, and usually supervise subordinate staff. Duties including previewing, selecting, and purchasing instructional materials; administering the center/laboratory budget; and overseeing facility schedules. Incumbents work with faculty members to modify or develop plans and procedures to circulate, maintain, and secure course materials. This class is distinguished from the Instructional Center Technician by the Supervisor's responsibility for staff supervision and instructional material development.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty that requires managing the operation and schedules of several instructional centers. The work typically involves coordinating facility schedules to accommodate both student and faculty needs, coordinating media and equipment requirements with faculty, maintaining equipment and facility usage records, developing procedures to catalog media, resolving equipment maintenance problems, and arranging equipment loans. Other duties include working with faculty to select instructional media and equipment, developing and administering a budget, and demonstrating equipment operation for individuals and groups. Incumbents recommend purchases of equipment and software based on consultation with faculty. Other duties include overseeing center operations and assisting students with equipment problems, performing routine maintenance on equipment, and arranging for equipment and media resource loans.

Supervision Given: Positions supervise Instructional Center Technicians, office services staff, and student assistants.

Supervision Received: Performs work under the direction of a faculty member or administrator who approves equipment purchases, resolves scheduling disputes, and assists students with specific course content questions.

Scope: Positions in this class are responsible for a large instructional center or laboratory complex that provides support to the institution's academic programs.

Impact of Actions: Center/laboratory operations, schedules, and equipment affect student progress in courses and the institution's educational objectives.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts with students using the center/laboratory, with faculty members whose courses are supported by the center, and with media resource representatives to arrange equipment and media resource loans.

 

 

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledges: Considerable knowledge of center/laboratory equipment operation, and of media- and computer-assisted instruction.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to develop and coordinate facility schedules, supervise subordinate staff, demonstrate and monitor equipment operation, develop operational procedures, oversee records maintenance, and prepare reports, and to work with faculty and diverse groups of students.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Some training in audio-visual or microcomputer operations is desirable.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience related to academic resource center/laboratory operation; familiarity with applicable microcomputer hardware, software, and other instructional media. Supervisory experience preferred.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
