CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second and supervisory level class in the Audiovisual series. Positions in this class supervise diverse multi-media functions in support of educational, clinical, medical, public relations, and related functional areas. Positions consult with staff and faculty to determine program design, assess user needs, develop budgetary and equipment needs, and supervise audiovisual support staff members. This class is distinguished from the Audiovisual Technician by the latter's responsibility to operate and maintain audiovisual and related equipment in support of diverse agency programs.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty involving a full range of audiovisual functions including media design, development, production, selection, and utilization using a wide variety of audiovisual and computerized equipment. The work typically involves some video production, closed circuit broadcasts and computer projection and graphics production. Serves as Media Center Director, Campus Learning Resource Center Director, or Director of Studio Operations in the provision of specialized audiovisual/media education services to faculty and students. Trains student assistants and supervises media staff. Prepares and manages budget for equipment, maintains equipment inventory, film library, and oversees routine repairs of equipment. Identifies goals and objectives for the instructional media programs, and develops media operating policies and procedures. Produces audio-video informational and instructional programs. Makes recommendations to faculty or agency staff regarding appropriate use of media for effective instruction. May teach workshops for prospective student teachers. Prepares administrative reports as required. Installs audiovisual and computerized equipment.

Supervision Given: Supervises Audiovisual technicians and student assistants or other support staff.

Supervision Received: Receives general directions from faculty director, dean, assistant professor, media director, manager and/or training director, or other agency administrator.

Scope: Work significantly affects the agency, school, or facility's ability to provide specialized audiovisual educational services and programs in support of overall goals and objectives.

Impact of Actions: Effective design and production of instructional/specialized educational programs will provide the agency, school, or facility with appropriate audiovisual services. Errors in the development of programs could seriously impact the objectives and image of the agency, school, or facility.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with a variety of sources occur involving equipment, cost estimates, production, repairs, and technical aspects of the work. Contacts with staff from other state agencies, schools, and facilities are made to clarify, provide, and obtain information.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of media center operations and of a full range of audiovisual technical production techniques and equipment; and of audiovisual instructional methods.

Skills: Skill in operation of computer and peripheral equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise subordinate technical and support staff; to present ideas/concepts effectively both orally and in writing; to produce a variety of media programs; to install and repair audiovisual equipment; and to deal effectively with diverse groups of employees, faculty, and agency staff members.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with course work in media production, mass communications, or related fields preferably including courses in instructional technology.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience related to the design and development of multi-media instructional and production functions and media center operations.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
