Distinguishing Features of the Work

Plans, directs, and coordinates the various phases of a comprehensive student program in a large State college.

The duties invoke State-ride promotion of the college scholarship and' student assistance program and the pub publicizing of the curricula a and academic facilities available at the institution. Close working relationship are established with secondary school officials throughout the state to acquaint them with the student aid program, to solicit nominations for scholarships, and encourage applications for admissions from the more capable students. Responsibility is attached for evaluating scholarship applications and recommending to the scholarship committee the most deserving recipients for each award. In addition to administering the use of the student loan fund the incumbent also has responsibility for developing and expanding the participation of students and employers in the graduating senior and alumni placement programs.

The scholarship and student-aid program is administered with considerable independence under the general policies of the Scholarship committee The placement service is carried cut under the general direction of the institution head or his assistant with considerable latitude for exercise of individual initiative end judgment.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Corresponds with And visits high school principals and school board officials throughout the State ate in publicizing facilities available to students at the institution emphasizing? the desire for students of superior ability explains the various scholarships available, the student loan fund, and the student employment and graduate placement service; encourages school officials to nominate for scholarships outstanding students who ordinarily would not attend college because of financial difficulties.

2. Develops and trains an alumni committee in each Congressional District to assist in the Regional Scholarship Program and to interest outstanding Students in attending the institution; reviews, investigates' and evaluates applications of students nominated for Regional Scholarships by the district committees and recommends the more deserving nominees to the Scholarship Committee

3. Reviews and appraises all ocher scholarship applications from current and prospective students; determines applicants' need for financial assistance and recommends to the Scholarship Committee tile award of appropriate scholarships

4. Directs the program of job placement for new: graduates and alumni according to their education, interests and experience; consults with students to determine their aptitudes, backgrounds, and plans for the future and advises them on occupations for which they are best suited notifies a carefully selected group of industries and other employing agencies of available personnel and solicits their participation in

the placement program; arranges appointment schedules and physical interviewing facilities for industrial representatives and publicizes the visits to the student body.

5. Directs the use and distribution of student loan funds interviews applicants to determine financial necessity; determines the amount to be loaned on each request and the terms of repayment; maintains close contact with the institutional business office to insure that repayments are made according to terms of agreement.

6. Counsels students with financial problems and suggests proper course of action to follow; arranges for a scholarship, a loan, part-time employment legal advice, personal budgetary advice or other possibilities.

7. Maintains close follow-up or-up on alumni who have received scholarships or other financial aid from the institution and solicits those who have benefited materially from such assistance to establish new scholarships or contribute to existing funds.

8. Organizes and directs the college visitation program for secondary schools and prospective students selects and instructs faculty and administrative members to serve on visitation committees: receives requests for participation on "college day" programs and schedules itineraries for committee members.

 

Qualification Standards:

A Master's degree preferably ably in education, school administration psychology counseling, or related subjects supplemented by five years' experience in teaching or educational administration at the college or secondary school level, at least one year of which must have been in a responsible supervisory or administrative capacity. Additional experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent time basis provided no substitution is allowed for the undergraduate degree.

Mature judgment; thorough knowledge of' the college curriculum and administrative organization; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of scholarship administration, student aid and student place men"; considerable knowledge of public school administration and organization; ability to organize direct, and expand all services of a comprehensive student-aid program ability to represent and interpret the institution to professional educators; ability to contact industrial management and solicit representation in the graduate placement program; ability to train and supervise subordinates.
