Distinguishing Features of the Work

Plans and directs the educational program at a state facility for mentally retarded children

May supervise an Assistant Principal as well as teachers and other supporting staff. Reports to the Mental Health and Mental Retardation residential programs chief.

Plans and administers the facility budget. Approves purchases of supplies and equipment. Develops courses of instruction to be offered. Coordinates the work of the academic, vocational and physical education departments, and supervises the department heads.

Conducts meetings and conferences to orient and provide refresher training for teaching staff in the procedures and problems of working with mentally handicapped children. In consultation with psychologists and others, determines which children will be admitted to the school. Confers with parents on children’s needs and progress.

Meets with civic groups and other organizations to explain the school's program, and to answer questions.

Performs related duties as required.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the educational needs of retarded children. Knowledge of related curriculum and course development. Ability to plan and direct the operation of a specialized educational facility. Ability to supervise the work of professional and non-professional staff. Ability to work with mentally retarded children. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Graduation from a college or university, and possession of a valid collegiate professional certificate issued by the State Board of Education. Professional teaching and administrative experience.
