Distinguishing Features of the Work

Assists in the development, administration, and supervision of the educational programs of the Rehabilitative School Authority.

The work involves supervisory responsibility for the selection and development of curricula and educational materials and the establishment of student achievement standards for each individual school. Responsibility is included for the direction and in-service development of the educational staff. Liaison is maintained with other State and Federal agencies in the development of new and expanded educational programs. General supervision is received from the Rehabilitative School Authority Superintendent.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Directs and participates in the establishment of educational programs; determines and maintains standards of achievement and performance; supervises the selection of textbooks and teaching materials; recommends the acquisition, construction, or alteration of physical facilities for the educational plants.

2. Conducts conferences of educational staff and administrative officials to explain policies, objectives and general procedures; discusses plans for the development, expansion, and evaluation of educational programs.

3. Interviews applicants for teaching, recommends employment, promotion, transfer, or separation; develops in-service training programs for teachers; encourages participation in other programs for professional growth.

4. Serves in a liaison capacity with the State Department of Education to promote close cooperation and assistance in developing and modifying educational programs; with the State Department of Labor and Industry to obtain assistance with apprenticeship training and safety program; and with the Virginia Employment Commission in the evaluation of vocational aptitudes of inmate students.

5. Organizes and coordinates night school programs in the Rehabilitative School Authority as school facilities are available; assists in the location and selection of teachers for these programs.

6. Keeps the Rehabilitative School Authority Superintendent informed of current trends, practices, and changes in the field of education; recommends modifications and expansions of educational programs when such changes are indicated.

 

Qualification Standards

Possession of a master's degree in rehabilitation, social work, education or a related field and five years of administrative or supervisory experience in public or correctional schools.

Knowledge of educational programs; ability to supervise subordinates; ability to select, develop, and manage curricula.
