CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the single class in the Architectural Historian series which focuses on the identification, evaluation, registration, management, protection, preservation and conservation of architectural resources of historic and cultural significance. This includes reviewing and interpreting related policy, regulations, and compliance requirements: conducting and overseeing the collection and analysis of technical data on historic buildings, structures, districts and landscape architectural resources; researching technical data to support evaluation; maintaining project information and preparing status reports; reviewing permit or grant applications for presentation to review panels; and making technical recommendations on preservation practices to local, state, and federal authorities, non-profit organizations and citizens.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of the Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty in the collection, review, analysis, and documentation of data on architectural resources of historic and cultural significance; provides advice on and assistance in the resolution of preservation related problems; designs research and evaluation methods; collects and leads others in the collection of technical data; addresses impact on historic standing structures; prepares technical and resource management reports; develops procedure for identification, registration and management of architectural historic resources; reviews consultant proposals and grant applications; develops and distributes educational and information materials: and presents technical, procedural, and policy information at public hearings and other meetings.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor, however, positions may function as team leaders and may supervise temporary employees or volunteers.

Supervision Received: Typically receives general supervision from a Preservation Program Manager responsible for a major component of a state-wide preservation program.

Scope: Positions in this class collect, analyze, document, and interpret technical data in an architectural preservation program.

Impact of Actions: The work can result in the preservation or loss of historic buildings, structures, districts and landscape architectural resources and the conduct of local, state, federal and private development projects.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts with local, state and federal officials, property owners and groups involve obtaining and providing technical data and advice on architectural historic issues, policies, laws. and regulations.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of technical, research, and resource management practices and procedures related to the preservation of architectural resources and of related state and federal programs, laws, and regulations.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to apply technical and resource management principles to the preservation of architectural resource and the conduct of preservation programs; to identify, analyze, and interpret preservation data: to design, conduct, and oversee technical data collection and evaluation projects; to determine, document, and assess impacts to historic resources: and to communicate effectively.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE *

Licenses or Certifications: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in architectural history, architecture, historic preservation or related disciplines.

Level and Type of Experiences: Experienced in the application of technical historic preservation principles to architectural resources.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding know ledges, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class specification was revised effective November, 1990, as part of a study of classes in programs for the preservation of historic and cultural resources.
