Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs a variety of technical duties in the preparation of historical records and manuscripts for public or restricted use, and in the classification, preservation, and ARRANGING of such materials,

May report to a higher level archivist, or to a library or other administrator.

Arranges, classifies, and labels archival material such as public and private records and papers, manuscripts, etc. Performs necessary research to analyze the material, and prepares appropriate finding aids such as indexes, inventories, narrative descriptions, and entries for card catalogue file.

May clean, fumigate, and do basic preservation and repair work on materials, and oversee binding and microfilming. May develop displays and other means to publicize collections.

Provides research assistance to patrons in the use of archival material. Orients users to the collections and the regulations governing their use. Insures security of material being used. Prepares written responses to correspondence performing research, as required.

May participate in special projects or perform other duties, as assigned.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of library organization and procedures. Knowledge of foreign languages may be required in some positions. Ability to analyze and classify historical documents, and to perform related research. Ability to assist patrons, and to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Graduation from a college or university with studies in history, library science, or a related field. Training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the degree requirement.
