Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs general historical research, prepares research manuscripts, and directs subsequent manuscript publication.

General supervision is provided by a higher level historian who defines the scope of research projects, or general guidelines for manuscript publication.

Historical research is generally limited to one major topic, person, event, or site but requires development of methodology, assembling resources, and determination of validity of sources of data. Performs editing of historical publications to insure textual integrity and accuracy as well as stylistic and grammatical correctness. Works closely with authors of historical manuscripts regarding topic, treatment, documentation, and illustrations.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of historical research methods and resource references. Knowledge of manuscript publication procedures. Ability to conduct detailed historical research, and to validate historical data. Ability to edit publications and to prepare historical manuscripts.

Graduation from college preferably with a degree in history or a related curriculum, and experience in historical research, publication editing, and manuscript preparation. Training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the degree requirement.
