Distinguishing Features of the Work

Manages a dual purpose agency library, or manages a principal subdivision of a large multi-unit library.

Typically supervises a staff that includes lower level professionals, as well as paraprofessionals and other support personnel. Reports to an agency administrator, or a higher level library professional.

Management of an agency library in this category involves providing a resource facility for professional agency personnel, as well as providing library services for institutional resident/clients. Responsibilities include conferring with agency professionals regarding needs and objectives for both user groups, and participation in planning and individual patient programs, as well as performing the usual library administrative/technical tasks associated with acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, and staff selection/ training/supervision.

Management of a large library subdivision involves performing administrative and technical duties associated with a major activity such as acquisitions, cataloging, reference, circulation, serials, documents, or interlibrary loans. The selection, training and supervision of professional and non-professional staff is also involved, as well as consultation/coordination with other library administrators, and contact with library users.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of professional library organization, procedures and techniques. Ability to organize, set priorities and delegate. Ability to instruct and supervise staff. Physical ability to handle books.

Possession of a librarian's license issued by the State Board for the Certification of Librarians, and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities.
