CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first professional level class in the Transportation Safety series. Positions in this class serve as a transportation safety resource and advisor to localities within an assigned geographical area. This class is distinguished from the Transportation Safety Program Specialist class by the latter's responsibility for comprehensive program planning, development, and implementation, requiring research-based problem identification, and development of programs and solutions relative to transportation safety issues.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which involves supporting localities within an assigned geographical area of the state in their efforts to promote and recognize enhanced highway safety. Assists local transportation safety commissions and groups with the mini-grant funding process; assists with the development of mini-grant proposals/requests; reviews requests for mini-grants and makes recommendations concerning approval; evaluates projects funded by mini-grants and reports on effectiveness. Assists communities, localities, businesses and others in preparing and coordinating transportation safety promotional activities; coordinates activities with other local, state, and federal programs; advises communities and localities of available resources and assists in obtaining these resources; plans and organizes conferences and workshops; makes presentations concerning transportation safety issues; disseminates information and materials to transportation safety advocates, the media, and other interested parties; attends transportation safety commission meetings and community action group meetings as an agency representative and transportation safety resource and advisor.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Reports to a district Transportation Safety Program Supervisor.

Scope: Positions promote transportation safety and provide assistance, advice, guidance, and resources within an assigned geographical area of the state.

Impact of Actions: Work has an impact upon public awareness and knowledge of transportation safety issues within individual localities.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts with local government officials, businesses, community action groups, civic and fraternal groups, safety councils, schools, and other advocates of transportation safety to promote safety, provide information and resources, coordinate activities, and provide general assistance.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of transportation safety issues, resources available, and the goals and priorities of the state as related to highway safety; of the structure of state and local government; and of project management techniques.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; to plan and organize projects and activities; to make effective presentations; to present ideas in a logical and persuasive manner.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from a college or university with major studies in business administration, transportation safety, or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience working with transportation safety issues or programs.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
