CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class in the Marketing and Sales series for professional positions that perform specialized marketing activities for an agency marketing program. Positions in this class contact domestic and international firms to present and market Virginia as a tourism site and/or to provide its products through import/export activities. This class is distinguished from the Marketing and Sales Senior Representative class by the former's involvement with marketing strategies for a variety of products or services often in a geographically assigned area. This class is distinguished from the Marketing and Sales Consultant Senior class by the latter's charge responsibilities for specialized marketing activities for a territory within an outreach marketing program designed for industrial development or international import or export purposes.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty requiring the planning and implementation of various sales and promotional strategies to identify and persuade potential firms to import their goods through Virginia, and export Virginia goods and services abroad. Provides counseling to potential and present clients about Virginia goods, services and locations, and/or about the technical and regulatory aspects of foreign trade. Develops and presents market research data and statistics on Virginia firms, locations, and products. Analyzes needs, make arrangements and accompanies clients on industry tours. Makes presentations at meetings, seminars, and conferences of various trade associations, chambers of commerce, governmental entities, financial institutions, and industry representatives; and establishes and maintains contacts for potential trade leads.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives directions from a Marketing Assistant Manager, higher level marketing management position, or other agency manager.

Scope: Positions in this class affect the operation of a specialized outreach marketing program for an agency and the import and export activities within a territory.

Impact of Actions: Decisions have a significant impact on the number and type of prospects for Virginia, services and products. Effective decisions have an impact on the state's economic growth and development and the promotion of Virginia and its products.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external contacts with local, national and international firms involved in exporting and importing products and services; infrequent external contact with governmental officials, trade associations, chambers of commerce, financial institutions to promote import and export activities. Frequent internal contacts with agency staff to discuss and exchange information on marketing activities.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of marketing, economics and business administration; of sales and promotions techniques; and of national and international regulations pertaining to agricultural products, industrial development, or the transportation or related industry. Some knowledge of agency and Virginia programs and services.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to apply sales and promotional techniques and practices for local, national and international markets; to interpret regulations pertaining to various products, industrial development and/or the transportation industry; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to make presentations at meetings, trade shows, workshops and conferences; and to establish and maintain effective business relationships.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in marketing, economics, business administration or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in marketing service areas such as sales, promotions, or a related area.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
