CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Marketing and Sales series. Positions in this class perform specialized marketing activities and plan, coordinate and implement various marketing and promotional strategies for an agency marketing program. Positions may market multiple unrelated products and/or services within an assigned marketing area. This class is distinguished from the Marketing and Sales Representative class by the latter's responsibility to promote a specific product or group of products and services or target a specific consumer or group. This class is distinguished from the Marketing and Sales Consultant class by the latter's responsibility for contacting firms to present and market Virginia, and/or its products through import/export activities.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty requiring the selection and application of various methods and techniques to implement marketing or promotional strategies for a specialized marketing program. Such strategies include the development and implementation of sales promotions for products for a specific agency product or group of products and services; of local, national and international sales and media campaign strategies to promote diverse products and services. Some positions develop and implement a marketing plan which consists of a combination of strategies to promote products and services development within a marketing area. Identifies programs, services and/or products for expansion within a marketing area. Provides assistance to client, service or interest groups by providing promotional, research and educational assistance.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives directions from a Marketing Assistant Manager or higher level marketing management position, or other agency manager.

Scope: Positions in this class affect the implementation of a specific marketing strategy for an agency or marketing plan for a region of the state.

Impact of Actions: Decisions have a moderate impact on the attainment of the goals and objectives for a specific phase of an agency's marketing services program. Effective development and implementation of marketing strategies results in the successful promotion of assigned products or services.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external contact with businesses, specific consumers or buyers, media sources, and trade or travel industry representatives to collect and exchange information. Frequent internal contacts with state agency staff and agency managers to facilitate marketing strategies.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the principles and practices of marketing, economics and business administration; and of sales, promotions and communications techniques. Some knowledge of agency and Virginia products, programs and services.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to apply sales, promotional and communications techniques; to implement a specialized marketing strategy; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and to collect and analyze data.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in marketing, economics, business administration, communication or related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience in marketing, sales, promotions, communications or a related area.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class was established as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program and replaces the Agriculture Marketing Specialist class, effective July 1991.
