CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

 

This is the entry-level class in the Labor Market Analyst series. Positions are responsible for the collection, compilation, and verification of employment statistical data that is used to produce reports related to occupational staffing patterns, wage rates, and employment/unemployment statistics. Data is gathered and compiled in conformity to federal and state guidelines. This class is distinguished from the Labor Market Analyst Senior class by the latter’s responsibility for interpreting and analyzing statistics and exercising judgment in the methods of collection and gathering of data.

 

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

 

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty which requires collection, compilation, and verification of labor market information. Work typically involves analysis of data for trends and variances. Develops labor force characteristics, employment earnings, wages and hours, and employment and unemployment estimates. Interprets statistics and estimates, writes comments and develops supplementary graphs and charts. Answers requests for labor market information; mails surveys to public and private sector employers; researches information relating to employment, wages, and employer taxes; assigns industry area codes to employers and updates existing codes.

 

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

 

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of a Labor Market Analyst Supervisor. Receives general guidance and technical assistance from a Labor Market Analyst Senior to ensure consistent methodology and adherence to federal guidelines in collection of labor market information.

 

Scope: Positions in this class are engaged in a phase or activity

of a program to collect and disseminate federal and state mandated labor market information.

 

Impact of Actions: Gathers data that affects validity/accuracy of conclusions and/or interpretations and analysis of labor market information.

 

Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts inside the organization, with private sector employers, and representatives of federal agencies. The nature of contacts with employers is to explain the program and solicit participation.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the principles and practices used in data co action, including survey design and sampling. Some knowledge of the application of statistical concepts and automated data processing concepts.

 

Skills: None identified for this class.

 

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to extract and present pertinent data in graphic and narrative forms, write and present information, and analyze information and reach logical conclusions.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

 

Licenses or Certification: None.

 

Education or Training: Graduation from a college or university with major studies in business, public administration, math, or a related curriculum.

 

Level and Type of Experience: Experience related to the program area
