Distinguishing Features of the Work

Directs the programs for non-medical habilltation of residents of a training center for the mentally retarded and others with developmental disabilities.

The work includes planning, coordinating, monitoring, problem solving and supervising a staff of senior resource personnel from representative disciplines. This involves responsibility for development, implementation and evaluation of developmental program components which may include but are not necessarily limited to educational, psychological, physical and activity therapy, speech and hearing, vocational rehabilitation and social services. These program components complement and supplement the residential therapeutic and developmental services, and involve a similar emphasis on development of personal dignity, self-esteem and self-reliance in the client. General supervision is received from a Training Center Mental Retardation Programs Director.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Develops, coordinates, and assists with program evaluation, new program development and implementation.

2. Develops and implements in-service training; coordinates training with the residential facility involved.

3. Coordinates training both within and without facilities for staff of facility, students from educational centers, and community agencies.

4. Provides program consultation and problem solving by assignment of appropriate staff members of the service, may serve as member of clinical evaluation team.

5. Insures the proper preparation, maintenance, and prompt completion and submission of prescribed records and reports.

6. Recruits the professional staff and maintains relationships with surrounding centers of higher education.

Qualification Standards

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in sociology, psychology, special education, nursing, rehabilitation or closely related clinical discipline and two years of experience in a field relating to developmental disabilities. Additional graduate study may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience on an equivalent time basis. Additional experience may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience on an equivalent time basis. Additional experience may be substituted for graduate college education on an equivalent time basis.

Extensive knowledge of the various disciplines, methods, techniques and practices involved in providing therapeutic and developmental services, considerable knowledge of methods applicable to the management of therapy and training programs; ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and evaluate components of programs for non-medical habilitation; ability to work cooperatively and effectively with professional and administrative level institutional staff, technical subordinates and community representatives.
