Distinguishing Features of the Work

Assists in the development, implementation, and supervision of the therapeutic and developmental program of a living unit in a hospital or training center for the mentally retarded and/or others with developmental disabilities.

The work includes responsibility for insuring adequate staff coverage and constructive activities in the unit, interpretation of the requirements of individual developmental treatment plans to medical and other staff members, evaluation of the day-to-day effectiveness of unit operations and supervision of team leaders, developmental technicians and aides. Typically, the incumbent is assigned to a shift other than that on which the program manager is present. General supervision is received from a Training Center Program Manager who evaluates the work in terms of the day-to-day operational effectiveness of the unit.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Assists with planning, development, organization, implementation and evaluation of residential unit developmental programs designed to maximize the continuing social, emotional and physical development of developmentally disabled persons

2. Insures constructive activities and staff coverage; aids in development of recreational activities; prepares study reports and coordinates work with other specialized professionals.

3. Interprets developmental requirements of the individual to medical and clinical administrative staff and participates in design of individual treatment plan. ~

4. Coordinates the work of professionals, sub-professionals and volunteers assigned to the unit; consults with families and referral agencies.

May supervise the work of a sub-professional and volunteer staff engaged in developmental activities, directed to clients and agencies in the community served by the institution.

Qualification Standards

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in sociology, human development, psychology, special education, nursing, rehabilitation, or related clinical discipline, and two years of experience in a field related to development disabilities; or a bachelor's degree which included courses in behavioral or social science and two years experience in a field related to developmental disabilities, at least one of which was a Training Center Team Leader. Graduate study may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience. Additional experience may be substituted for the require college education on an equivalent time basis.

Considerable knowledge of principles and techniques of program planning, development and implementation, and of human behavior; knowledge of principles and practices in planning and implementing developmental therapy programs; ability to organize and supervise a living unit, to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, the professional staff and others.
