Distinguishing Features of the Work

Serves as the principal reimbursement officer in a large or multi-facility Mental Health Mental Retardation field office operation.

Supervises reimbursement representatives, clerical, and other supporting staff. Reports to the agency central staff Mental Hospital Reimbursement Director.

Establishes office procedures including billing schedules, payer rates and case priorities. May investigate the most difficult or sensitive delinquent cases. Prepares cases for litigation, and attends court sessions. Conducts annual accounts review to determine if patients have acquired additional financial assets. Makes recommendations for writing off uncollected accounts.

Trains, supervises and assists professional and other supporting staff. Provides training to facility administrators to give them a better understanding of reimbursement practices.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of hospital accounting/collection principles and practices. Knowledge of federal and state laws governing hospital accounts collection. Ability to develop office policies and practices. Ability to deal with persons on sensitive financial matters. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to direct the work of others.

Graduation from a college or university, with major studies related to the duties of the position. Experience in a related area of work, including management-level experience, and exposure to automated accounting systems. Training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for college graduation.
