Distinguishing Features of the Work

Serves as the principal reimbursement officer in a small to medium sized Mental Health/Mental Retardation field office operation.

Supervises a small staff of fiscal and clerical support workers. Reports to the agency central staff Mental Hospital Reimbursement Director.

Reviews/audits patient accounts in hospitals and clinics characterized by homogenous Patient populations, low turnover. and relatively stable patient account activity. Establishes office procedures including billing schedules, payer rates, and case priorities. Participates in obtaining patient financial information, and in assisting patients or their families in seeking third party financial assistance. Prepares cases for litigation, and attends court sessions.

Trains, supervises and assists professional and clerical supporting staff.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of hospital accounting/collection principles and practices. Knowledge of federal and state laws governing hospital accounts collection. Ability to develop office policies and practices. Ability to deal with persons on sensitive financial matters. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to direct the work of others.

Graduation from a college or university, with major studies related to the duties of the position. Experience in a related area of work that, preferably, included supervisory responsibilities, and familiarity with automated accounting systems. Training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for college graduation.
