Distinguishing Features of the Work

Directs all administrative activities at a small MH/MR facility, or manages major support service functions at a large facility.

General supervision is exercised over administrative department heads. Reports to the facility director or chief administrator.

Positions allocated to this class typically serve as chief administrators in small facilities with relatively homogenous patient populations. The facilities offer a limited range of services such as short-term psychiatric treatment, or intensive residential and day treatment services for children and adolescents. The size and mix of supporting administrative staff is relatively limited.

Duties include budget preparation and financial accounts management; policies and procedures development; overall management of support services such as buildings and grounds, purchasing, and food and laundry services. Incumbents normally serve as part of the facility's senior management staff.

Positions may also be allocated to this class to serve as administrative heads of major support services at large MH/MR facilities. Such support services may include fiscal operations, buildings and grounds, purchasing, or food and laundry services.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of accounting and fiscal management procedures. Knowledge of hospital administration and institutional support functions. Ability to plan and implement operating policies and procedures. Ability to plan and direct the work of professional support staff.

Graduation from a college or university preferably with a degree in business, hospital, or public administration; and experience related to the duties of the position. Training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for college graduation.
