Distinguishing Features of the Work

Plans and coordinates various activities associated with the billing and collection of patient hospital accounts.

Supervises Hospital Accounts Collection Assistant Managers, Hospital Accounts Collectors A and B, and clerical personnel. Directions are received from a Hospital Administrative Assistant C or other administrators.

The duties include managing one or more of the activities involving billing of accounts, collection activities, patient financial counseling, third party payer arrangements, legal proceedings, and the use of private collection agencies. Billing and collection activities encompass both inpatient and outpatient accounts.

Coordinates billing and collection activities, maintaining appropriate internal safeguards of accounts receivable records. Advises patients, guarantors or other responsible parties of financial obligations resulting from hospital inpatient or outpatient services. Coordinates activities required to initiate legal proceedings, employ private collection agencies, or develop special arrangements for delinquent accounts.

Works with various hospital managers, state agencies, insurance companies, custodians and the general public to ensure that all charges for hospital services are paid from the appropriate sources.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of hospital patient accounting. Knowledge of hospital billing and collection. Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures. Ability to coordinate activities among various hospital managers. Ability to explain hospital financial policies to patients and relatives. Ability to direct and supervise the work of others.

Graduation from a college or university with major studies in hospital administration, accounting or a related field, and experience in hospital billing and collecting activities. A combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the degree.
