Distinguishing Features of the Work

Assists a Hospital Accounts Collection Manager in administering a program for the billing and collection of patient accounts.

Direct supervision is provided to Hospital Accounts Collectors A and B, and clerical personnel. General supervision is received from a Hospital Accounts Collection Manager.

Coordinates activities of Hospital Accounts Collectors engaged in billing and collection activities. Ensures that hospital policies and procedures are followed. Secures and analyzes information concerning patients' insurance coverage and/or abilities to meet hospital expenses. Answers questions and resolves problems involving complex patient billing or collection circumstances. Conducts follow-up reviews of patient accounts which have been billed to third party payers to ensure that payments are being received. Evaluates patients' files and makes recommendations of accounts to be referred to collection agencies or attorneys. Counsels patients and/or relatives in the more complex or sensitive situations.

Works with various hospital managers, state agencies, insurance companies, patients and custodians to ensure that all charges for hospital services are paid from the appropriate sources.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of basic hospital accounting practices. Knowledge of hospital billing and collection policies and procedures. Ability to explain basic hospital policies to patients and relatives. Ability to supervise the work of others.

Graduation from a college or university with major studies in hospital administration, accounting or a related field, and experience in hospital billing or collection activities. A combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the degree.
