Distinguishing Features of the Work

Serves as an outside investigator and collector of delinquent accounts of medical hospital patients.

The duties involve following up delinquent patient accounts as assigned in an attempt to collect or to persuade the debtors to visit the hospital credit department and make or renew arrangements to settle the delinquent accounts. The work, subject to review, is performed with considerable independence under the general supervision of higher level administrative personnel.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Visits ex-patients and guarantors who have delinquent accounts at the hospital, attempts to collect accounts or to make arrangements for payments or for a conference with hospital credit and collections office personnel.

2. Checks on accuracy of addresses given by patients still in hospita1 and investigates financial background of patients in hospital who have not made satisfactory financial arrangements with hospital authorities.

3. Collects payments from employers of ex-patients and guarantors in cases in which the debtor has agreed to the use of a payroll deduction plan; traces "skips."

4. Compiles information regarding delinquent accounts to be turned over to the hospita1 accounts committee and make recommendations to the committee as to the disposal of accounts.

5. Makes persona1 calls to explain mistakes made by the hospital in billing patients.

6. Acts as an assistant to the credit manager when not out on assignment.

7. Makes periodic report on calls made, amounts collected, etc.; submits, upon re quest, special reports concerning outside collections.

Qualification Standards

Completion of a standard high school course and three years of experience in collections, sales, claims investigations, or similar work involving public contact. Related education may be substituted for experience or experience related to the duties of the position may be substituted for education on an equivalent time basis.

General knowledge of credit and collections techniques, mental alertness and good judgment; ability to make accurate reports; ability to deal effectively with the public.
