Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises and performs routine administrative activities in a general, teaching hospital.

This is the beginning level of hospital management work involving the supervision of a routine administrative activity which is controlled by well-established procedures and regulations. Assignments genera11y include supervision of such activities as night admissions or subsidiary nursing service but may include work in any functional area or organizational unit if performed under close supervision. The work is outlined and appraised through regular and frequent conferences with supervisors.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. As night superintendent, receives and receipts for payment tendered after regular hours; supervises admitting clerks on night duty; maintains hospital regulations governing admissions, visiting, releases, maintenance, and housekeeping; represents the hospital administration when incidents not involving policy changes or administrative deviations occur which demand immediate action.

2. May supervise immediately the day-to-day operations of such activities as a day nursery, employee recreational facilities, and custody of medical records.

3. Immediately supervises subsidiary nursing service personnel to assure full coverage on a continuous basis; plans for induction and in-service training of such personnel; interviews applicants and makes recommendations for the appointment of such personnel.

4. May be assigned to assist with special projects or peak loads in any of the operational areas, such as budget and finance, supplies and equipment, housekeeping and maintenance.

Graduation from college preferably with major studies in business or public administration and at least one year of experience in public administration, institutional management, or related fields; or completion of college supplemented by completion of a prescribed program of studies and field work for hospital administration. Additional experience of an administrative nature any be substituted for education on an equivalent tine basis.

Knowledge of the principles, practices, and problems of institutional management; working knowledge of office procedures and organizational patterns; ability to effectively supervise the work

of others.
