Distinguishing Features of the Work
Administers the claims/risk management unit of the Department of Highways and Transportation.
Supervises a small clerical support staff. Work is performed under the general direction of a Highway Division Administrator.
Plans and coordinates the investigation and settlement of various claims such as injuries to private citizens, private property or private vehicles; contamination of natural resources; and workers compensation. Reviews claims to determine what data are needed. Conducts investigations to gather data and develop evidence. Makes recommendations to Attorney General's Office concerning settlement possibility and dollar amount.
Maintains claim records and statistics, and makes recommendations on claims reduction and prevention. Advises and counsels department managers on interpretation of state code and statutes, and trains field office personnel in the application of statutes and procedures. Supervises unit's clerical staff in various aspects of claims handling and processing. Approves such insurer payments as medical bills and rehabilitation training costs.
Has frequent contact with agency managers, insurance agents, claimants, and representatives of the Attorney General's Office.
Qualification Guide
Knowledge of claims investigation and processing procedures. Knowledge of relevant state statutes including the Workers Compensation Act, and related state personnel rules. Ability to obtain pertinent facts, and to make recommendations concerning the disposition of claims. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to work with a variety of people. Ability to supervise the work of others.
Graduation from a college or university with major course work in accounting, business administration, insurance or a related field, and experience (including supervisory experience)related to the
HIGHWAY CLAIMS SUPERVISOR Page 2
position's duties. Training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the degree requirement.
