Distinguishing Features of the Work
Directs the Marine Resource Commission's fisheries management division.
Provides administrative supervision to subordinate department heads in harvest statistics analysis and fisheries plans development, oyster planting and conservation, and oyster ground leasing and surveying. Administrative direction is received from the Commissioner.
Is responsible for developing fisheries management plans and supporting legislative and regulatory proposals for dealing with the conservation and enhancement of state finish and shellfish resources. Utilizes scientific, economic, and sociologic information to analyze overall fisheries industries conditions, and to develop plans for optimal benefits.
Responsibilities also include exercising public leadership in dealing with industry problems, resolving conflicts between user groups, and in presenting analyses and action plans to legislative bodies and regulatory boards.
Organizes citizen and industry advisory groups to participate in conservation and management measures. Strives to achieve balance among group interests, and to minimize regulatory burdens that inhibit seafood industry expansion and innovation.
Qualification Guide
Knowledge of marine species and environments. Knowledge of the economics and applied practices of the seafood industry and its regulatory framework. Ability to exercise public leadership in developing industry plans and regulations. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to direct the work of technical personnel.

Graduation from a college or university with major course work in marine science, fisheries, or a related field, and related management-level experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
