Distinguishing Features of the Work

Manages all aspects of an agency data processing activity typically including data entry and control, computer operations, and systems development and engineering.

The activity managed usually involves a number of existing and/or developing systems, a network of remote locations, and a sizable diversified staff. Normally the incumbent is responsible for a range of administrative and technical functions such as: planning; budgeting; and formulating policies, procedures and standards for all aspects of agency data processing. Provides guidance to agency management, and liaison with vendors, user sections, and central state departments. Oversees employment, training, utilization and evaluation of subordinate staff

Customarily reports to a principal agency administrator.

 

Qualification Guide

Graduation from a college or university with major study in computer science, management information, engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline, plus extensive experience in various aspects of data processing management. Receipt of a related associate degree, or suitable technical and supervisory experience in the areas to be managed may substitute for college graduation. Related graduate study may partially substitute for experience.

Thorough knowledge of data processing concepts. Demonstrated ability to manage one or more functions in a large data processing activity. Proven ability to communicate effectively with users and agency management. Familiarity with project management.
