Distinguishing Features of the Work

Designs, develops, maintains and enhances complex computer and related manual systems.

Confers with users to define needs. Exercises wide latitude in assessing needs and in determining alternatives for satisfying them. May program complex segments or a series of complex segments of a computer program, supplying logic and/or physical specifications. May provide direction or supervision to subordinate programmers or programmer analysts, or act as team or project leader. Incumbents of this class may spend a greater portion of their time in either programming or systems analysis, depending on the project assigned or the system development section’s current needs.

Reports to a systems development supervisor or other data processing management position.

 

Qualification Guide

Qualification under any onerr of the alternatives prescribed for Programmer Trainee, plus significant experience in analysis assignments and proven ability to interact effectively with subordinates, users and data processing management. Considerable knowledge of systems analysis and design techniques. Knowledge of project management techniques such as PERT or CPM. Considerable skill in at least one programming language such as COBOL, FORTRAN, PL/1, Assembler or RPG.
