Distinguishing Features of the Work

Directs the activities of a principal division of the Department of Information Technology consisting of two or more functional branches.

Supervises a large staff of data processing or telecommunications technical specialists and other support personnel through subordinate managers or supervisors. Reports to the Deputy Director or Director of the department.

 

Telecommunications Directs the overall management of the Telecommunications Services Division consisting of the voice operations and engineering, technical network research and plans, and data operations and engineering branches. Is responsible for statewide needs analysis and planning; advising agencies in designing and developing systems and facilities to meet individual agency needs; providing user training; and evaluating statewide and agency telecommunications services and performances.

 

Computer Services - Directs the overall management of the Computer Services Division consisting of the operations, data base, technical, telecommunications, and IBM and Sperry systems support branches. Is responsible for directing the operation of all data processing equipment in the state computer center; installing and maintaining all data base software, and providing technical assistance to data base users; monitoring and evaluating hardware, software and on-line communications performance; and installing and maintaining the program product and systems software which controls the IBM and Sperry central processors and peripheral devices.

 

Information Services - Directs the overall management of the Information Services Division consisting of the customer liaison and support, technical services, and systems development branches. Is responsible for providing liaison between customers and Department of Information Technology service divisions to ensure that customers' needs are addressed; providing technical assistance and training to both customers and DIT divisions; assisting customers with automated productivity tools for improving management efficiency; and providing systems development services on a cost-reimbursable basis.

Administration - Directs the overall management of the Administration Division consisting of the financial and administrative services, procurement and contracting, information resource management, and the legal branches. Is responsible for providing financial management and accounting, and compliance assurance support for both DIT and its clients; developing and administering a comprehensive state data processing and telecommunications procurement and contracting program; assisting agencies in developing long range information management programs; and conducting state data base-related activities and administering state information technology policies.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of a broad range of data processing and/or telecommunications methodologies and techniques applicable to specialized operating areas. Ability to plan and direct the work of multiple operating functions. Ability to supervise the work of a large professional/technical support staff. Ability to work with agency and other government officials. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Graduation from a college or university with major studies in a field related to the position’s duties, and extensive experience which included administrative responsibility in data processing or telecommunications work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
