CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first managerial class in the Store Operations series. Positions is this class function as managers, having charge responsibilities, of large retail-type store operations such as bookstores, convenience stores, and canteens in universities~colleges and institutions. This class is distinguished from the Store Operations Supervisors class by its responsibility for supervising operations of greater complexity, which require the delegation of many daily-y operational activities to subordinate staff; and by its increased responsibility for long-range planning.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of the Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty which involves planning and directing retail-type store operations. The work involves conferring with faculty, agency personnel, and customers to identify items to be stocked; determining appropriate stock levels to be maintained; monitoring the ordering of items to replenish stock levels; developing vendor sources and identifying alternate sources; determining and adjusting prices and mark-ups; monitoring inventory control records; monitoring cash controls; compiling or reviewing financial reports; supervising Store Clerks, Store Operations Supervisors, inmates, students, and/or office services workers; establishing and implementing policies and operating procedures; projecting operating budgets; determining staffing needs for peak business periods; and ensuring stock is stored properly and rotated periodically. Positions may maintain accounts and records for inmates or students. Positions may oversee the return and "buy back" of merchandise (primarily textbooks) and may monitor used book sale operations.

Supervision Given: Positions typically provide general supervision to Store Operations Supervisors, Store Clerks, office services staff, inmates and/or student workers performing storekeeping and customer service functions and compiling financial report and inventory data.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from a dean, another higher level administrator or manager.

Scope: Work affects the operations of the store which in turn affects the accessibility of merchandise and the quality of services provided to customers.

Impact of Actions: Maintenance of an adequate inventory of merchandise, competitive pricing of stock, and appropriately scheduled hours of operations ensure that necessary services are provided to customers and promote good customer relations. In a college or university setting, the timely acquisition of textbooks and related instructional materials is essential to faculty and student instructional preparation. Errors could result in costs in terms of time, money, and customer goodwill. Inadequate planning and direction could result in a loss of store operation profit.

Personal Contacts: Positions have frequent contact with agency staff and customers to identify items to be stocked; with vendors to ensure timely delivery and competitive pricing; and with customers to answer inquiries and resolve complaints.

 

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledges: Considerable knowledge of retailing and marketing; store operations planning; inventory control; recordkeeping practices and procedures; and supervisory principles.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to develop operational policies and procedures; to direct the work of others; to identify appropriate merchandise and inventory levels; to determine appropriate price markups; and to communicate effectively with customers and vendors.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certificates: None.

Education and Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in retail store operations, inventory control, marketing, and developing vendor resources. Some experience in supervising the work of others.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges, and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program and replaces the Store Manager B and Store Manager C classes, effective July 1991.
