CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Store operations series. Positions in this class function as customer service representative performing all activities necessary to efficiently operate retail outlets such as Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) stores in the sale of alcoholic beverages in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This class is distinguished from the Store Clerk class by its greater accountability for inventory control and the variety and impact of its administrative responsibilities. It is distinguished from the Store Operations Supervisor class by the latter's supervisory responsibilities, and by its exclusive use in ABC stores.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which involves providing customer assistance in the selection and purchase of alcoholic beverages; performing sales transactions on computerized cash register according to established procedures; observing customers and checking identification to determine legality of sales; informing customers of legal transportation limit; complying with established security guidelines and safety procedures; maintaining proper level of funds in cash drawer; observing sales area and general area of store to deter shoplifting and robbery; detaining shoplifters, if possible, until appropriate authority arrives to make an arrest and take custody. Positions are accountable for individual cash shortages and a designated portion of stock shortages. This class complies with established shelf management procedures; stacks and dates cases of merchandise in stockroom; codes stock for placement on shelves, stocks shelves and rotates stock; compares computerized reports to merchandise on hand, tracks back orders and merchandise status, reconciles inventory, and reports any discrepancies such as shortage and breakage of merchandise to store management; documents reports for credit from vendors; assists with assembly of retail and licensee orders; assesses sales volume of merchandise and coordinates with other stores to identify the location best suited for slower selling merchandise; assists with packing transfers and damaged merchandise; performs general cleaning duties of store premises; performs minor maintenance; cleans and maintains external store premises, including Parking lots

and sidewalks; assists management in the preparation of store reports; and directs the operation of a store in the absence of store management. May accompany management to bank to deposit funds; and may cut and re boxes for salvage.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor in this class

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from an assistant store manager or a store manager with respect to detailed assignments, but works independently within established policies and procedures

Scope: Work affects the operations of an assigned store or retail outlet.

Impact of Actions: Accuracy of work affects the revenues from sales of alcoholic beverages and accountability of merchandise. Appropriate decisions in the sale of alcoholic beverages facilitates the safety of employees and the general public, and ensures the legality of the sale.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external contact with the general public in the sale of alcoholic beverages; and with licensees of establishments operating with an ABC license to execute supply activities

 

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledges: Working knowledge of retail store operations, and basic recordkeeping and math functions.

Skills: Working skill i.e. the operation of a computerized cash register terminal.

 

Qualifications GUIDE*

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions; to read, write, and make basic mathematical calculations; to reconcile inventory and error reports; and to communicate effectively with the public and other employees.

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education And Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience involving the sale or

Inventory of merchandise.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

CLASS HISTORY
