CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Store Operations series. Positions in this class are responsible for ordering, stocking and retailing merchandise at an agency canteen, commissary, convenience, or bookstore. This class is distinguished from the Store Clerk Senior class by the latter's greater responsibility for inventory control, the variety and impact of its administrative responsibilities, and its exclusive use in ABC stores.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Positions in this class perform work of routine difficulty in the operation of an agency canteen, commissary or bookstore. Duties typically include operating the cash register and performing cash receipt settlements; providing customer assistance; filling out and receiving purchase orders; stocking and displaying merchandise; and arranging for the shipment of merchandise. Duties also include performing physical inventories and maintaining inventory records.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions may lead the work of student assistants.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Store Operations Supervisor or Manager, or other business management position.

Scope: Performs work which affects the accessibility of merchandise to students, agency employees, or inmates.

Impact of Actions: Proper performance of duties enhances the operation of the commissary, canteen or store. Failure to perform duties can lead to inefficient store operations, and the inefficient use of resources.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with customers, vendors, accounting and security personnel, and visitors for the purpose of obtaining and retailing merchandise.

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of cash register operations, of basic mathematics; and of inventorying techniques and procedures.

Skills: Working skill in operating a cash register and adding machine.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally; and to lift merchandise in order to physically stock shelves.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education and Training: Education or training sufficient to perform basic mathematical calculations.

Level and Type of Experience: None required for entrance into this class.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established as a result of the Classification Review/ Specification Update Program. It replaces the Store Clerk A and B classes, effective July 1991.
