Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs administrative and managerial duties in directing a multi-facility university retail stores operation.

Supervises a sizable staff through subordinate managers who specialize in functional areas such as text book or technical item purchasing, sundry and speciality item marketing, sales management, and accounting/inventory systems. Work is reviewed by the university's business manager in terms of quality of service and profitability as indicated in regular written reports and financial statements.

Plans, justifies and controls a substantial operating budget. Develops or approves policies and procedures designed to insure maximum profitability through effective purchasing, pricing, security, customer service, and cash flow/inventory control. Management decisions have a significant monetary and instructional impact within the university.

Establishes lines of communication with student groups, faculty, administrators, and vendors in order to make improvements, and serve educational needs. Hires, trains, schedules and supervises subordinate staff~ff

Positions in this class are distinguished from the University Retail Operations Manager A class by the larger subordinate staff, the existence of separate speciality stores that must be staffed and/or operated independently, and the financial and merchandising complexity and consequence associated with a larger retail operation involving a more substantial budget.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of large scale merchandising methods and procedures, and sources of supply for products sold. Knowledge of market analysis techniques, commercial accounting, and business law. Ability to develop management policies and procedures. Ability to plan for profitability, and to adapt to market conditions. Ability to deal effectively with customers and vendors, and to supervise subordinate managers and employees.

Graduation from a college or university with a degree in a related field, and management experience in a retail setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
