University Retail Operations Manager A 13017

Performs administrative and managerial duties in directing a large, single facility university retail store operation.

Supervises the work of subordinate staff performing merchandising and sales work. Duties are performed under the direction of the university business manager who reviews written reports and financial statements, and approves proposed policies.

The duties include responsibility for purchasing, displaying and marketing a large volume of books, class and office supplies, sundry items, and other specialty goods. Plans, justifies and controls a large operating budget that has a direct impact on sales and profitability. Develops policies and procedures designed to insure maximum profitability while meeting the university's educational needs.

Maintains detailed cash accounting and inventory records. Coordinates store activities with faculty members, university administrators, students and vendors. Hires, trains, schedules and supervises subordinate staff.

Positions in this class are distinguished from lower level store manager classes by the size of the subordinate staff, the number and variety of items sold, and the more significant fiscal consequence to the university if the retail operation is not self supporting.

Knowledge of large scale merchandising methods and procedures, and sources of supply for products sold. Knowledge of related purchasing, accounting and inventory control procedures. Ability to develop operating policies, and to select and price marketable merchandise from reliable vendors. Ability to hire, train and supervise subordinate personnel. Ability to coordinate store operations with faculty, students and administrators.

Graduation from a college or university with a degree in a related field, and supervisory experience in a retail setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
