Distinguishing Features of the Work

 

Records and transcribes verbatim or summary testimony given at formal hearings. Duties are performed under the supervisor of an agency administrator or professional.

 

Testimony may be taken by shorthand dictation, or by the use of steno-type or steno recording equipment. Hearings may be held in an agency central office or at various locations throughout the state, and incumbents may be subject to 24-hour call.

 

Takes testimony which can involve technical language in various professional fields, and which can be made difficult by the inability of those speaking to enunciate clearly or use correct grammar. Testimony may involve a number of participants who are permitted to speak without being recognized for each statement or question.

 

Prepares official transcripts of hearings and findings including copies for interested parties, lawyers and courts. Other duties may include sending out forms or notices; preparing subpoenas; arranging for the appearance of witnesses; assembling files and correspondence; or other miscellaneous administrative secretarial duties.

 

 

Qualification Guide

 

Knowledge of grammar, punctuation and transcript production. Skill in shorthand dictation and/or stenotype or steno recording equipment. Vocabulary skills. Ability to deal with the public and to travel as required.

 

Graduation from high school or secretarial school, and proven competence in stenographic work. Training and experience indicating possession of the foregoing knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for high school or secretarial school graduation.
