CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in a series for positions working in a mail room and performing routine postal support duties such as receiving, sorting, processing and delivering mail. This work includes courier services involving delivering and picking up mail, information, supplies or other items by driving a motor vehicle or walking an assigned route.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty which consists of a few tasks that are well-defined and directly related with little variation from specific instructions and procedures. Opens, stamps and sorts incoming mail in order to route it to the proper employee or section by using equipment such as letter openers or extracting machines. Delivers and picks up mail, supplies or other items in order to transport the mail or materials within or between agency premises by walking or driving a motor vehicle. Prepares outgoing mail, special mailings and packages in order to protect articles being mailed and to meet agency or postal regulations by folding, stuffing, sealing, wrapping, and weighing using equipment such as postage meter machine, folding machine, decollator and bursted. Other duties may include ordering standard supplies, maintaining a mailing list and cleaning equipment.

Supervision Given: Supervisory or lead work is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from an office supervisor, manager or professional. The work is closely controlled and assignments are accompanied by detailed and specific instructions.

Scope: Work affects those aspects of an agency's program which depend on mailed communication and the proper handling of mail.

Impact of Actions: An agency's flow of mail can be disrupted. Errors in processing the mail will cause some inconvenience and time delay in responding or reaching a decision on actions to take.

Personal Contacts: Contacts are made with individuals within and outside the agency in order to exchange information and answer questions about mail schedules or procedures.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGES: Some knowledge of basic office practices, procedures and current equipment; and manual and/or automated envelope, package handling or sorting systems.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read, write, perform basic arithmetic, stand and walk for extended periods, lift bags and packages, perform basic mail handling procedures, learn operation of standard mail room equipment and follow oral and written instructions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Driver's license may be required in some positions.

Education or Training: High school graduation.

Level and Type of Experience: Some mail, office or related experience.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding KNOW LEDGES and abilities may substitute for this training and experience.

This class is one of the 15 new generic classes established in the Office Services occupational group effective July 1, 1986, as a result of the statewide clerical classification study.
